In gardening, propagation refers to the many ways of starting new plants. These methods range from planting seeds to cutting, graphing, cloning, and budding.
Propagation by seed Propagation by seed is the most commonly known method of producing new plants, seeds are produced through sexual propagation. Common annual and biennial vegetables and flowers are grown easily from seed. Perennials grown from seed may take more than one season to flower. Advantages
- Wide choice of seeds on the market and readily available
- Disease free at the start & can help avoid certain diseases
- Often the cheapest & easiest method to grow large numbers of plants
Propagation through cloning/cutting Cloning is basically taking a growing portion of a plant - a stem with some leaves attached, and helping it to become a brand new plant that is genetically identical to the original plant . This is fairly easy to do because plants often clone themselves in nature. It's called asexual propagation. Some of the methods used are taking cuttings, layering, division, grafting, budding and tissue culture. Advantages
- Endless free supply after you have selected a suitable parent plant
- Normally more energetic than seedlings and take less time to mature
- Predictable and repeatable results
